Europe 2012: NYC & D.C.

This is the blog of my trip to Europe in 2012.  Over 9 weeks, I went to many countries over the summer, including London, where I went to the Summer Olympics!  Enjoy these pictures and videos :) - Brian

New York City
My first city on the trip was a stop on the East Coast in NYC.  How could I just fly over it on the way to Europe?  Here I am, arriving at my friend's house on the first night, backpack on, ready for fun.

My first breakfast in the city...coffee and doughnuts!  Coffee from the Roasting Plant, and doughnuts from the Doughnut Plant.  Fresh ingredients, and so, so good.  This one is Carrot Cake.

Washington D.C.
Some friends and I took the train from NYC to Washington D.C. to catch a Yankees/Nationals baseball game.  Here I am with Bill passing the time with a cards game that I wasn't very good.

Here's the four of us, fresh off the train in D.C.! Bill, Deep, Jim, and me.

Washington Monument.

I love baseball stadiums!  Look how green the grass is and how blue the sky is.  The Nationals have quite a cool stadium too.  You can see some of the monuments and buildings past the outfield.

Three of the four guys known as the "Dulces Boys".  (long story).  Rob, me, and Jim.

Later on that night, I broke my non-McDonalds policy and grabbed a McFlurry.  Sometimes you just want M&M's!

A beautiful view of the Washington Monument from one of the lakes nearby.  And two ducks.  The ducks are for perspective.  Now you can see how big the monument really is.

Here's my reflection in the Vietnam Memorial.  So many names.

Abe Lincoln babysits tourists for free.  What a guy!

Some cuddling going on in the shadows.

Sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial is about as American as it gets.

At the Korean War Memorial.  Good to remember.

The brand new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.  It really looks cool at night!

(Back to) New York City

Back in New York City, here's the view of the East Village from Jim's apartment at night.  Not a bad view - you can see the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.

And here it is during the day!  That really is a pretty great view.  (Unfortunately, the building under construction in the foreground will soon block the ESB.  Boo).

Strolling through Midtown, I stumbled upon a Guinness world record being set for the biggest Yoga class ever.  Over 14,000 people braved 100+ degree heat here in Times Square to take part in the event on the Summer Solstice.

Here's one of several screens in Times Square that was broadcasting different angles of the event.  It was pretty hot!

Every summer, Bryant Park has a free film festival.  Though I've been to NYC many times, I've missed it every time.  This year I made it!  Right at 5pm, they make an announcement, and everybody races out and puts down their blankets to save a spot for the move later that night.  It's quite a sight to see everyone run out there at once.

The movie of the night: Psycho! Check out the tall buildings in the background - not a bad setting for a thriller.

No trip to NYC is complete without a visit to Broadway.  Here I am at Newsies.  It finally came to Broadway!  Lots of fun.
